Just back from Omega Institute where we spent the weekend learning Tonglen meditation with Pema Chodron.  Click here to listen to more of Pema’s teachings.

Pema Chodron – “This Lousy World” from Omega Institute on Vimeo.

Over the weekend, we wrote down people’s names and their illness or problem. On Sunday morning, Pema read the lists out loud before we did Tonglen for them.   Each name with a disease—the lists were long and repetitive: cancer (every kind imaginable), dementia, diabetes, stroke, Alzheimer’s, brain injury, etc. Interspersed were the many names followed by mental illness, substance abuse, severe depression, addiction, chronic mental illness, schizophrenia.  I’m not sure what I am trying to say here, but I was overwhelmed by how many people are suffering from mental illness and addiction.  Even a bit shocked.   Has this always been so or is our world and how we live becoming too much for so many of us?  More later…
